Back At Ya From Philly By: K-C Bajai |

I was out and about stompin' on the dance floors of some of Philly's funkiest spots a few weekends back. I stopped into Eden Roc down on 15th and South Sts, for philly2nite.com's promo party. Twelve deejays on two floors. One of those deejays was the legendary and unsung Antonio. Antonio lays claim to being one of the first dj/promoters to bring New York house spinners down to the city over a decade ago.
Anyway, Antonio was holding court on the decks and the hip-hop heads were givin' up mad props. Suddenly Antonio was off and Kenny Meez was on. That's when the radio came on. You know what I mean? When a deejay comes to the decks and starts spinning the kind of shit you hear on your local Urban FM station. I'd heard Meez spin at Evolution when that was the dopest hip-hop set in town. I couldn't believe he was playing the tracks he was spinning!!! What's more, the crowd was loving it!!! I had to get up out of there. I don't go to night clubs to hear the radio. I don't even listen to that at home.
Now before you get the wrong idea, Kenny Meez knows his shit. He's one of the best in town. I can't blame him. And as much as I want to, I can hardly blame the kids at the club for wanting it. The roll these days is familiarity and comfort. Back in the day when I was chillin' on the scene 7 nights a week, I went in search of new sounds. My favorite deejays were spinning obscure tracks with funky grooves and rhythms seamlessly woven into a non-stop party.
The corporate radio industry has infiltrated the nightclubs. UGH!!! Will I survive???
Luckily, there are some promoter/deejays who are still challenging our ears and our butts.
