Hot SummerTime In The City By: K-C Bajai |

Hello CyberKribbers. Finally got some time to transcribe my adventures amongst Philly's denizens of the nocturnal world. July is sooo hot right now!! Hot! Hot! HOT!!!! DJ culture continues to dominate the set while small indie bands are making a comeback. One of the best bands from Philly right now is Sweetie, a three piece trip hop ensemble rivaling Portishead, (the U.K duo that pretty much set the post Massive Attack trip-hop standard). Sweetie has been playing small venues around town. We caught up with them at The North Star Bar, where they opened with a housie dance tune before oozing into their trip-hop set. Melissa, the sexy lead has torch singer presence and universal sex appeal.
Last Monday, we popped into Lucy's on a humbug (more on that in a minute). After experiencing the return of The Verge at Brave New World's V.I.P. lounge and missing Jafar Barron's performance at his CD release party at The Five Spot, we snuck into to Lucy's for a drink. DJ Ralph was on the decks ripping da shit UP!!!!! Ol' skool hip-hop, a few jiggy tracks, but mostly solid party stuff. Next Monday we will be going back to check out more of Ralph's set.
Tuesday we finally made it down to Fly Tuesday at Marmont with DJ Sean Thomas on the wheels and Tommy Up and Scottie chillin' at da bar! Sean always spins good tunes even if there weren't THAT many people there this time to enjoy it. Fly happens every Tuesday at Marmont in Old City. After Marmont we crashed The Five Spot for the Black Lily open mic set. Sadly we discovered that the commercial hip-hop radio station is now "sponsoring" the event. In between prose and poems we were subjected to commercial messages from "our sponsor." Commerce is the scourge of creativity, so we will be looking for another open mic venue. No disrespect to Motive Records, Black Lily or the Jazzyfatnastees, history has shown how grand concepts have been ruined by commercial ventures.
Rounding out this week's events:
Wednesday: (July 5th) DJ Cosmo celebrates his birthday at Fluid with Philly's hip-hop queen Bahamadia and Good Vibes label mates Slum Village and special guest DJ Rich Medina. Happy Birthday Cosmo!
Thursday: (July 6th) Sweet @ Brasil's w/ Hollis p. Monroe, Willyum, Jon Gil and Gi Gi. House music that ripples your body.
Friday: Worship Friday's at Filo's with Rob Paine (Worship Records) Deep house, dub, roots reggae, dancehall and cool atmospherics.
Saturday: Cozmic Cat spins purrrrrrfect vibes at The 700 Club.
Sunday: Audiofunk @ Van M's with Sean Deep... funky breaks and stuff like that.
Okay, so that's the deal for now. I will send you more adventures next week. Possibly some Fourth of July type stuff, parties in the park and more fun Philly vibrations.
