What's Up Toronto, and all peeps peepin' this column from around the world, or where ever you are. This is my first and from what I have heard long-awaited contribution for the Crib. I hope to be submitting these transmissions on a regular basis keepin' you up on what's going down party-wise in Philly.
First let me tell you, all the news isn't going to be hip-hop. I may be the hip-hop columnist for Philly's City Paper, but if my life began and ended with hip-hop I would have missed a whole lotta ill grooves, funky riddims and phat-ass beats.
Wilhelmina's Lounge has closed. There are no actual details, just rumours that the owner/manager wasn't taking care of the biz. More rumours indicate that she wasn't in the best of health so that could have been a reason as well. Still, great nights like Mr. Cisum's (DJ for the Philly hip-hop group Name) will have to find a new venue.
DJ's Waxonwaxoff and Paras, both part of the philly2nite.com team had been holding down Wednesday nights at Wilhelmina's for a minute. They have already found new digs. The first week of February the rocked St. Jack's on a Friday and quaked Eden Roc on Saturday. They were a couple of taste tests. The philly2nite.com crew have moved their weekly set to Cloud Nine on Tuesday nights.
This weekend (2-12-00), Shampoo and City Paper present LoveFest III, the pre-Valentines party featuring erotic clothes, erotic food, erotic give-aways and who knows: perhaps a few erotic people. Should be a horny time for all. $10 gets you through the door. Dress in Red for what it's worth. 21 plus w/ id!
On going events of interest: Mondays: Deep C and Udoh are still spinning the deep house vibes at Lucy's on Blue Mondays. Meanwhile, Jugo & Jeff remain as esoteric as ever at Magnetique at Silk City. No cover at either event. If you don't mind separating with a fin to hear live jazz, stroll up to St. Jack's.
If Latin houssies are more your tempo, sway your butt down to Fluid for "Spanish Fly" the weekly Latin House Party every Tuesday. DJ Aaron "The Kosherican" Levinson bleeds the decks for beats & riddims. $5 cover. Philly2nite.com is at Cloud Nine. Rob Paine does his thing at St. Jack's. Darien Bagley presents Tuesday's only Reggae party, Irie at the Eighth St. Lounge. The Jazzyfatnastees host Black Lily, a showcase of exceptional female talent at The Five Spot. Lorenzo's Millennium hosts Gay night.
The first Wednesday of the month, DJ Cozmic Cat hosts Baggariddims at Silk City. A reggae vibe with guest deejays and supa funk sets. DJ Milkyway at the 700 Club. Trivia nuts check out Quizo in West philly at the New Deck Tavern. And Doc Martin's host an open mic comedy jam.
Thursdays Cozmic Cat sets the Groove Loungeat St. Jack's and Big Rich Medina and company feul the funk at Eighth Street Lounge. Shampoo host Smile Thursdays. DJ Milkweed spins at Kaleidoscope.
Fridays, you're on your own. You can walk into anyplace and there's something going on.
Saturdays go anywhere but stop into Grass at Silk City and finish up the night at the 700 Club for the final 90 minutes of Cozmic Cat's set. It is always dynamic!
