DC Report - Sweet Spot: Volume 6 (Amel's Groove) By: Paradox |
Back |
I fell in love again.
Innocently going out to have a good time and hear some good music, I was instead mesmerized for two hours by a siren by the name of Amel Larrieux.
Formerly of the dynamic duo, Groove Theory, Amel made a return trip to DC just to show us all that she's doing just fine on her own.
Jiggy city's reaction?
Her November show: Sold out
This show: Sold out
Any future shows: Guaranteed sold out!!
Yes indeed, being single definitely agrees with her. (that makes one of us...)
Playing mostly cuts from her most recent album Infinite Possibilities, Amel soothed the crowd with the earthy grooves for which she has become known. Staying true to her word that her and Bryce (the other main member of GT) were heading in different musical directions, she left a great deal of her old material untouched, instead opting for her new, less commercial sound.
The audience didn't seem to mind. (although I wouldn't have minded hearing me some, "Hello!" )
Nor did the audience mind the aforementioned opening act, VA's own, "Infectious Organisms." Combining hip hop and jazz, yet still sounding 'upbeat,' this dreadlocked crew had the receptive crowd open .... that is, until the woman took an hour and a half to hit the stage!!
All in all, another phat show that you should check out when it hits your town.
