Illamentalz Concert Review: Muzikally Insane, Frankenstein, Mathematik, Bahamadia |
Back |
First off, apologies to Kelly. I looked for you, but with all the stink looks I got just trying to figure out if people were you, I wasn't about to ask anyone if it was you.
Secondly, to all the heads, bear with me, I got back from the concert at 3am last night, and had to get up at quarter to six for work. If some of this is slightly incoherent...
Now for the concert review.
Underground heads came out in droves to represent last night at the Bahamadia concert. First up was DJ Muzically Insane, who played some good tunes, but didn't impress me too much. A couple of times, he pulled out second copies of vinyl and I started to get amped, waiting for the tricks, but he basically just restarted the song and let it play.
Next up was Frankenstein, who did his best to get the crowd live and did a fairly good job, but lyrically, I just wasn't feeling him. Frankenstein is an ill producer, but he needs to either spend some more time working on his rhymes or step back from the microphone and leave it to the specialists. The highlight of Frankenstein's set was actually when he pulled Tara Chase and KC Thomas from the Circle up on stage. Don't sleep, both of these MCs are extremely talented.
Mathematik was up next, and he simply rocked the spot. Unfortunately, right when the crowd started to get it's most hype, the sound cut out as they had problems with the power supply. After fiddling, playing with and cajoling the equipment for an hour, they finally got it up and running again, but there wasn't time at that point to continue his set. Nuff respect is still due, and make sure you cop his album when it drops.
Mastermind went to work on the 1s and 2s when the sound system came back up, and played some absolutely sick tunes. Preview info-keep your ears peeled for the new Choclair with Guru. Dat deh riddim is BLAZING!!! It should be on Choclair's album, which is supposed to be dropping sometime soon.
Bahamadia was up next, and she was pleasantly surprised by how live Toronto heads were, and how many of them knew and were feeling her shit. She ripped through "True Honey Buns," "Innovation," a Roots remix of "I Confess," "Innovation," "Spontaneity," "UKNOWHOWWEDU," and "Wordplay." Nobody can or should front on Bahamadia, definitely one of the most gifted lyricists to bless a mic. She also did a capella versions of "When I Shine," her single with the Herbaliser from "Very Mercenary" and "New Forms," the title cut off Roni Size and Reprazent's album. As if that wasn't enough, she debuted a new song with Herbaliser production that is supposed to be off her forthcoming album. All I have to say is that the beat is NASTY. Check for that as soon as you can.
All in all, this concert was much like the Aronists the week before. Well worth the $10 (ten bones for all these wicked artists?). Be there next week as the Illamentalz series presents Mountain Bros. And say hello to your friendly neighborhood Dread if you see him. Peace.
