feat. special guest LADYBUG MECCA of DIGABLE PLANETS
presented by Aritzia
Saturday, December 18 @ El Mocambo

All Bgirl School (from top left to right): KhanhRtist, DJ Dalia, Masia One, Liza Paul w/ Dema Dog, Eclipse, Lady Noyz, Sunny D, Tara Chase, Julia Che, EGR.

A word from Masia One:
I'm going to get to the point: this show means a lot to me. I forgot how old I was, maybe 13 maybe more. My godfather took me to a Sade concert, where a little known group at the time, The Digable Planets, opened. I just recall being glossy eyed and jaw dropped at the woman on stage. For every young girl in my position at the time, the witnessing of a female rocking the mic with such splendor and eloquence opened a new realm of understanding. Like Asia One or Lady Pink before, here was Mecca (Ladybug), not griping about being a woman in hip hop, but just being, and doing what she knew best.

The story is two fold. I also recall avidly watching RapCity around this era, and being completely thrilled watching an emcee named Tara Chase rock with The Circle. I told myself at the time, "Man this girl can spit - and I bet she's cool as ever". You know what? I was right on both accounts.

I think a funny thing about being in the business of music, is that your affairs become public property. As an artist, I put myself out there, and become fair game to public criticism of my art, my thoughts and my appearance. Sometimes fielding off scrutiny when you're tired, broke and overworked becomes taxing. Then an opportunity comes along like this one: I get to collaborate and work with one of my inspirations. Suddenly being in the public eye allows me to celebrate the literal realization of a dream with everyone, and for this I know I am truly blessed. I'd like to encourage all purveyors of art to make it out to December's M1 Academy not just to celebrate with a very happy Masia, but to witness some of the most beautiful and talented women I know that happen to all love hip hop. The girls that have contributed to this night, both at the photo shoot and at the performance are at once my contemporaries and inspiration. Thus far, my life remains an open book, and the story just got better.

LADYBUG MECCA

Ladybug Mecca was instrumental in the Digable Planets receiving the 1993 Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for their album Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space). Reachin', as well as their sophomore album Blowout Comb (1994), experimented with hip hop genre-bending fusions in a way that proved the Digable Planets were ahead of their time in more ways than one.

If it wasn't for Ladybug Mecca, the hip hop world might never have had Lauryn Hill. Ladybug was a female emcee who held her own amongst the other two male members of the group. She has recently completed her solo debut, a self-titled album released through the independent label Nu-Paradigm, run by her executive co-producer Nkosi Gray (Ko-Produced). Other contributing producers include: Sa-Ra Creative Partners, Mr. Khaylil (Bush Babees), Eric Rico (Planet Asia, 4th Avenue Jones'), Shane Conry, Isreal, and South African producer/musician Masauko Chipembere "Black Sunshine". The album also features a guest appearance by soul/rock/folk singer Martin Luther.

"Mecca The Ladybug makes great strides in proving women in rap don't need to scream and swagger in order to be tough and assertive," wrote Larry Flick in Billboard magazine. "Mecca never raises her voice but always is a commanding figure."

M1 would like to thank Che Kothari (www.schematamedia.com) for once again lending his skilled eye to the photo shoot. Che, you're the best and you always come through with the rawness! As well, a special thanks to Juliana de Caria and Andres R. Vila for agreeing to do hair and make-up for the shoot at last notice. This team created 10 different looks for each of the girls!!! If you like what you see, they can be contacted at: j_decaria@hotmail.com. Chris Thomas, you've done it again...it's a banger. Flyer design: sirch@rogers.com.

HIP HOP SOUNDCLASH (NOVEMBER RECAP)

M1 Academy's debut hip hop soundclash was history in the making as we brought together some of the best, and some of the most slept on deejay talent in our local TDot hip hop scene. Each duo of deejays flexed their mixing and selection skills for the crowd, who came out in good numbers to support their local deejay favorites. Anticipation of deep crate diggin' by each crew, provided many a hip hop gem to be spun, with about 95% of tracks from the pre-2000 era. Two rounds, twelve deejay sets, and many a sweaty brow later, literally every single audience member cast their vote and the winner was declared. The duo of DJ Mensa and Rod Skimmins, M1 Academy's resident duo took the crown. You guys make M1 Academy so proud! (sniff)

The M1 Group and TheCyberKrib.com would like to thank all of the participating deejay crews who we were blessed to work with on this event, including Circle Research (Nix and Astro), Triple "S" Soundcrew (Mr. Grumpy and Jake dSnake), 2Swift Household (E & J Swift), Make Money Hu$tlas (Big Jacks and Royale), and the soundclash runner-up System Soundbar Crew (DJ Flash and DJ Law). We'd also like to thank the many great sponsors who provided some great goodies for all the deejays and the crowd, including PNB Nation, Spiewak, and Gravis. Making the night a success and a reality were Aritzia, Play De Record, CKLN, CHRY, and MOOG Audio.

Stay tuned for the next Soundclash in the spring of 2005.
