Straight from Hali (former stomping grounds of the 'Krib's own Rec) comes Classified with Unpredictable. Representing the varied Canadian underground scene is difficult at the best of times because of the sheer size of Canada, and the lack of support for artists north of the border. Unpredictable, however, is a solid album.
Class handled all of the production himself on this one. The beats are adequate, but probably won't have anyone holding their head in shock. He keeps things simple and minimalistic, with a few layers of drum, a bassline, and maybe a bell or piano riff to round things out. Guest production is handled by White Mic, Double "J," and Jorun. The tightest production on this album is probably "Why," with an acoustic guitar over a solid bassline.
Lyrically, Class is quite strong. While not a lyrical genius by any stretch of the imagination, he is above average at the least. His guest artists, Mad Craz, Loonie, Nathan "C," Jorun, White Mic, Connx and Divo hold their own, but are nothing to write home about either.
There are some notable misses here. For example, "My Life," has a circus sounding organ riff over a simple drum loop and a REALLY annoying hook. "One Day" is a good concept, but it's not quite carried off properly.
The tracks that attract the most attention include: "We'll never fall," "Sound Off," "Juno Massacre," "Why," "It's Pretty Obvious," "What tha...," and "The Bad Side remix." Unlike most albums these days, this album remains strong throughout, perhaps even holding the best songs for the end of the CD.
This is a solid addition to the Canadian hip-hop scene. It's worth at least a listen, and hopefully Classified will garner more support on the strength of this project. Look for more solid contributions from him to come. The notoriously fickle Canadian audience may take a while to realize it, but they have another talented artist on their hands here.
