In 1993, King Tee, already a veteran Left Coast MC introduced the world to a bunch of Alkoholiks. Since then, the Liks and their Likwit Crew have consistently produced innovative, cutting edge hip-hop. The newest member, Defari Herut, now releases his debut album, and continues his crew's tradition of strong albums.

"Focused Daily" showcases Defari's many strengths, as the real-life history teacher demonstrates his ability to flow slow or fast, solo or with the crew. He also refuses to fall into the easy traps of commercialism or "bitch-ho" stylings. He kicks pure hip-hop with a healthy sprinkling of the knowledge, but not so much that it overpowers the music.

Production on the album is well above average with duties handled by E-Swift of the Alkoholiks ("Never Lose Touch," "Juggle Me"), Evidence of Dilated Peoples ("Keep It On The Rise," "Thunder & Lightning") and Alchemist ("Focused Daily," "Killing Spree"). My vote for most improved producer goes to E-Swift, who departs from his usual style to come with some absolutely sick beats. Check "Lowlands Anthem, Pt. 1"

All of the guest artists hold their own, from Likwit crew members Xzibit, the Alkoholiks and Phil Tha Agony to Evidence. Defari wisely chooses against having too many guests though. Showcasing his many skills and various flows.

Songs to check for: "Never Lose Touch," "Lowlands Anthem, Pt. 1," "Bionic," "Killing Spree," "Juggle Me," "Thunder & Lightning"

The final verdict: A very stong addition to anyone's collection. There's a lot of good hip-hop supposed to drop in the next couple of months, but this one is worth the ducats. (Even as an import.)
