Asian's in hip hop??? Ten years ago this may have been a reasonable statement, however wit the globalization of hip hop culture the presence of Asian's in this music cannot be denied. The "Elephant Tracks" compilation is a showcase of what the Asian and Pacific Islander youth of America have to offer the hip hop community. All proceeds from this Cd go toward the APISA (Asian and Pacific Islander Student Association) High School Motivational Conference at the University of California, Sant Cruz.

DJ Rhettmatic of the Beat Junkies sets things off on "People Don't Know How Nice I Am", an appropriately named cut setting the stage for the album to come. Philly's Mountain Brothers drop a new cut "Community" which deals with anti-asian discrimination, which is no doubt one of the best performances I've heard from them, as well as a highlight of this CD. Newcomers, KNT (Kali Noize Terrorists) flip a catchy upbeat, self-produced joint with scratches courtesy of DJ Apollo. Underground female favorite Medusa, drops vocals and lyrics on "Mine To Give", a track dedicated to the ladies. AME consisting of Asiatic, Mygraine and Explizit really impress over an ill Asiatic produced track, held together by stand up bass and smooth horns. Zion I, a group bubbing in the west, drop an uplifting track "Sunshine Beats & Rhymes." Look for their upcoming LP on Ground Control/Nu Gruv. The female hip hop army, New York based Anomolies, drop "No Illusion" with 427 and Zion I, while Roli Rho and Kuttin' Kandi of turntablist squad 5th Platoon get wild on the zigga-zigga on "It's About That Time." Also appearing are 427, Rizing Sun Productions, Latyrx, Encore, Visionaries, Mista Sinista, Vinroc and Stalagmytez.

Tracks to check on this LP are ALL OF THEM. This compilation is one the most solid hip hop compilations I've heard so far in 2000. Much love and respect to executive producer Christine Padilla, and to all the asian and non-asian DJ's, producers, emcees and b-boy's who took part in the project.

Through well constructed lyrics, this album speaks beatifully for all cultures who must strive for success in North America, through eduction, elevation and perseverance. With an equal number of non-Asians featured, this collage of positivity leaves the listener with a good taste in their mouth following this rhythmic feast. Ah...the uniting beauty of hip hop! Check out the album sampler below in real audio for a taste of this LP.
