The Canadian scene is currently making a big push for recognition south of the border and internationally. Many forget however, that there really wouldn't be a Canadian scene without pioneers like Maestro (Fresh Wes). His accomplishments are nothing short of amazing in the game. He's been around for almost ten years, and Ever Since marks his 5th album release. Many artists in the big pond of the States market have not shown that kind of longevity. Through it all, he has remained humble, willing and eager to work with the next generation of Canadian MCs.
Maestro's career began with the groundbreaking "Let Your Backbone Slide," a single from the 1998 album, Symphony in Effect. This go round, he has stronger production than ever, recruiting heads like Tyson Kuteyi, Saukrates, Kardinal Offishall, Frankie Ano (formerly Frankenstein,) Jay Rome, Solitair, Quattro Cinco of Ghetto Concept and Baby Blue Soundcrew's K-Cut. While some of the tracks are quite strong, others suffer from over commercialization, with generic beats, and similar lyrics.
This is a real shame, as Maestro is an accomplished lyricist. He never pretends to be super hardcore, but tracks like "Maestro-Glycerine" and "Perseverence" prove that he takes the lyrical side of his craft very seriously. Lyrical guest appearances are very limited, but Wade O. Brown drops by to provide a few hooks
"Maestro-Glycerine" sets things off with a fire that continues to burn through tracks such as "Ever Since," "Heatwave," "Rizin 2 Da Top" and "Perseverance."
Pay attention to this one. Maes is definitely nice on this one. Give this a listen, it's light years better than most of the commercial shit out there. While it stilll may be too commercial for some, there is something for everyone on here.
